Unionists participating in Battle at Nueces River

Union sympathizers, mostly German settlers from Gillespie, Kerr and Kendall counties, were traveling to Mexico to avoid conscription in the Confederate army. Sixty two men met at Turtle Creek in Kerr County and others joined during the trip to bring the total to 68 or 69. The oldest was 35 years old. After the troop reached Nueces River in Kinney County on Aug. 9th, the Confederates attacked early the next morning. Twenty eight men returned to the Hill Country. The monument, Treue der Union, is dedicated to these men and is located in Comfort TX.
